Black Women Stand Up to Uterine Fibroids

The Center for Black Health & Equity in partnership with The Resilient Sisterhood Project, has developed an interactive E-Leanring Module to support advocacy and facilitate conversations between Black women, their peers, and providers.  

“Black Women Stand Up to Uterine Fibroids,” is designed to empower and support Black women throughout their journey with uterine fibroids. The goal of the Uterine Fibroids E-Learning module is to provide comprehensive information about the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options for uterine fibroids. Supplemental resources and tools to help empower women to make informed decisions about their health.

The objectives of the E-Learning module are to:

Provide evidence-based information about racial disparities in diagnosis, treatment, and health outcomes for Black women diagnosed with uterine fibroids (including under- and misdiagnosis).

Understand the different types of uterine fibroids and how multiple fibroids and their size and location impact treatment options. Define the symptoms present in young adults and older women.

Understand how uterine fibroids can affect perimenopause and postmenopause.

Describe available options and various considerations when exploring the choice of treatment.

Explain how to minimize exposure to toxins, including endocrine disruptors (understand what you can control and what you can’t in service of advocacy).

Identify culturally competent resources that promote stress management, nutrition, holistic self-care, and mental health.

Discuss tips, tools, and resources for self-advocacy (the entire burden is not on the patient). Know where to find additional resources [and assistance/support].
